Crystal White PS Vita landing in Hong Kong June 28th, overpriced import shops two days later

It was bound to happen eventually, every other gadget does it. After debuting in a serious black sheen, the PS Vita is now getting a stylish white shell as well. Sadly, the shiny new pale version will only be available in Hong Kong at first, starting June 28th. There’s no price premium for grabbing the lighter shade of handheld, though, if you want the matching white accessory pack, you’ll have to pre-order. On the plus side, if you pledge now, they’ll toss in the Trooper Pack, Armor Game case, 4GB memory card and (perhaps most importantly) a lint free cloth for free. Check out the PR after the break.

U.S., France search for Afghan compromise

Visiting French President Fran?ois Hollande told President Barack Obama on Friday that France’s combat troops would leave Afghanistan by year’s end and pledged to find a way “for our allies to pursue their mission” in talks at a looming NATO summit. The two leaders also bonded over jokes about fast food, a move that recalled ugly Franco-American tensions ahead of the war in Iraq.

France will support Afghanistan “in another way, another form” Hollande told Obama as they met for the first time in the Oval Office. But “the date of the end of 2012 is, for (French) combat troops, the final date.”

Obama’s NATO-backed strategy for ending the deeply unpopular war calls for shifting the burden of security to Afghan forces next year (a step the NATO summit in Chicago this weekend is expected to detail) on the way to a full withdrawal of alliance combat troops by the end of 2014. At the same time, he recently signed an accord with Afghan President Hamid Karzai that may keep American military trainers and counterterrorism troops in the war-torn country to 2024. U.S. officials have expressed hope that France will consider a similar compromise, which could avert a possible rush to the exits by other war-weary allies.

“We’ll discuss this again at the summit in Chicago, and I think that we’ll be able to find a way to make it possible for our allies to pursue their mission and for France to keep the promise I made to the French people,” said Hollande, who campaigned on a pledge to pull France’s combat troops out by the end of the year.

“We agreed that even as we transition out of a combat phase in Afghanistan that it’s important that we sustain our commitment to helping Afghans build security and continue down the path of development,” said Obama.

Obama and his guest, the first Socialist French president in 17 years, seemed far closer on other issues: Both cited the need to stimulate the sputtering global economy. “Growth must be a priority, even as we get our public accounts in order,” said Hollande, whose calls for jobs initiatives is a break from predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy’s austerity agenda. Obama and the French president were to meet hours later at Camp David with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has called for stricter fiscal discipline, at a summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations.

“We’re looking forward to a fruitful discussion later this evening and tomorrow with the other G8 leaders about how we can manage a responsible approach to fiscal consolidation that is coupled with a strong growth agenda,” said Obama.

The French president also said he and his host had agreed on the need for Greece to remain in the eurozone?Europe’s common currency area?despite the country’s profound debt crisis and calls from some quarters for dropping it from the 17-nation economic union.

“We share the same belief, that Greece must remain in the eurozone and that all of us must make an effort to achieve that goal,” said Hollande. “And I wanted to send the Greek people this message: Your place is in the eurozone.”

Both leaders also showed a united front on the tense diplomatic crisis over Iran’s suspect nuclear program and international efforts to end Syria’s bloody crackdown on opposition to President Bashar al-Assad.

Obama’s talks with Hollande kicked off a frenetic four days of guns-and-butter diplomacy, starting with the G8 meeting at Camp David and continuing through the NATO summit in Chicago.

Both Afghanistan and the economy are central to Obama’s legacy?not to mention his hopes for re-election in November. And the back-to-back summits offer vital opportunities to get the United States and its closest allies in closer harmony.

White House officials have worriedly watched Europe’s debt crisis, concerned that a recession there could infect the already-weak American economy. And the president has made a successful handover of security responsibility from NATO-led forces to their Afghan counterparts by the end of 2014 one of his signature foreign policy goals.

“Our economies are interdependent. What happens in Europe has consequences on the United States. And what happened in the United States had consequences for Europe,” said Hollande. “The more coordinated our actions, the more effective we can be.”

(Hollande later doubled down on his Afghanistan policy in a press conference before the G8, telling reporters his withdrawal pledge was “not negotiable,” Agence France-Presse reported.

“The withdrawal of combat forces is France’s decision and this decision will be implemented,” he said. But he noted that France would “make its decisions in harmony with its allies, including our American partners.”

After 2012, any remaining French forces “will simply be tasked with logistics to bring home our equipment” and will take part in efforts to train the Afghan police and army.)

As the meeting began, Obama referred to Hollande’s youthful adventures in the United States, which he traveled to in 1974 on a grant from a business school. The future president of a country famed for its food studied McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken, both unknown at the time in France. “I could have made a fortune in cheeseburgers, but I finally chose politics,” he recently told The New York Times.

After offering Hollande a “hearty congratulations” on his election victory, Obama noted that his guest “actually spent some time in the United States in his youth, studying American fast food?and although he decided to go into politics, we’ll be interested in his opinions of cheeseburgers in Chicago.”

“I want to thank President Obama for his vast knowledge of my life before I became a politician. And I want to say nothing that might suggest that cheeseburgers might have any flaws,” replied Hollande.

“I just want to remember that cheeseburgers go very well with french fries,” joked Obama. “No declaration about french fries,” Hollande said, in English.

That light banter recalled deep tensions between Paris and Washington in the run-up to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, a war France fiercely opposed. U.S. lawmakers at one time voted to change the name of french fries to “freedom fries” in their cafeteria, while Air Force One served “freedom toast.” Neither food is known as “French” in France.

yong – Frugal Family Tree: DaySpring Greeting Cards and Home …

Greeting cards are one of those items that do not cost a lot but can make a big difference. Buying cards for a birthday, a thank you or congratulations is something my Mom has always done. I loved shopping with her to buy cards. Now as an adult and Mom I continue to buy cards as a way to keep in touch with loved ones and to send a Thank You. I have many treasured cards that I have received over the years from loved ones. I even have a little card with Scripture on it that my Kindergartner teacher gave to me when I was 4. I have treasured that little card almost all my life. As a small child the Scripture spoke to me and I have made sure through all the moves and changes in my life that my little card stays safe with me.

I like to purchase greeting cards and stationary that has Scripture on it to share a little bit of God’s word with someone I cherish and to maybe be the one that gives the little card that someone else might treasure. My husbands side of the family I always make sure to buy a gift or greeting card with Christian Scripture on it. I know for them it makes it much more special to have the Christian theme on it. It makes me feel good to send it too.

We usually grab a card at other stores while we shop for groceries and household products. I have more than likely purchased every Christian Thank You card at Walmart and needed new cards to send. We shop at Family Christian Stores mainly closer to holidays for cards and gifts. I will definitely be shopping there for DaySpring cards at least once a month. I did not realize the variety of cards available from DaySpring. There are cards by DaySpring that are only $0.99, Max Lucado cards, Peanuts cards, cards that a portion of the sale go to children’s charities, and so many more. I liked the encouragement and thank you cards available. We have family that we send Thank You cards to at least once a month and it was wonderful to be able to find so many. I dislike sending the same card twice so I am always on the look out for new Thank You cards.
I have known that DaySpring makes great greeting cards, note cards and small gifts but I did not know the variety of other products. I even found Recordable Books that I was unaware DaySpring made. We have many Hallmark ones and these ones were a comparable price but had a Christian theme. My mother in law is having a birthday next month and the books would make a great gift. They also make mugs, tote bags, reusable cups, indoor and outdoor decor and even some cute Eco-Friendly themed items.
I went shopping for DaySpring thank you greeting cards and found many more great items. I found a DaySpring coffee mug ( I love coffee all day long!), some Peanuts thank you note cards ( I adore Peanuts items), note cards that I can send to cheer up someones day and a key chain that was on sale.
I looked online at DaySpring.com before I went shopping to look for Home Decor ideas. We are? redecorating a few rooms in my house and I found some really nice stuff online. I looked for many of the items I liked in the store but could not locate them. I am glad to know I can buy them online. I like the DaySpring site, lots of great items for a good price. The sale section was my favorite, of course since I am a frugal Mom.
This Thank You card from the Colors of Compassion DaySpring line I purchased to send to a family member in Oklahoma. I love the colors and that part of the money for the card helps children’s charities.
?The info on the back is great for the card recipient to read. Its nice to know that a greeting card your are receiving also helped others in need.
?This card from the Little Inspirations line will be for my Mother in Law. Its only $0.99! They had many really cute cards for that price. The price makes it easy to be able to send a card without having to wait for a special occasion. I would like to see even more Mom to Mom cards available, I think they are sweet.
This is the message that is inside the bird little note cards I purchased for $0.99. I will be sending one of these to my Grandmother in law in Illinois. She could use some cheering up.

?These Peanuts cards are beyond cute! I am going to send one to my Mom. She is the one who shared Peanuts with me when I was a kid. Its family tradition to watch the Peanuts cartoons for a holiday
This is the key chain I have had on my keys for years. I treasure this very much since it is beautiful Scripture and a gift from my Grandmother in Law.
?Since the key chain broke I now keep it in my wallet to bring it with my where ever I go.? I looked for a DaySpring key chain and some Jewelry but could not find any. I asked some of the employees but they were not sure either. They were nice enough to help me look and find other items.
My new key chain for my keys. It was a great buy being half off.
I really like my new DaySpring Mug. I am going to fill out my cards, mail them and come back home to have a cup of coffee to enjoy the rest of this beautiful Spring Day.

You can read my Google+ Story about my shopping trip to find DaySpring products at Family Christian Stores. I found so many great cards, notepads, stationary, home decor and movies during my shopping trip.

Garden office workers lead the way – North Leeds Plumbing & Heating

Working from home has become the reality for one in twelve people in the United Kingdom today. For many of us, the morning commute consists of a few steps across the lawn to our garden office where we can escape the hubbub of domestic matters and knuckle down and concentrate on the work in hand.

The rise in numbers of homeworkers has fed a new industry of garden office manufacturers. Companies have sprung up over recent years in response to the demand for bespoke office space at home. Craftsmen and designers have worked together to come up with thermally-efficient, compact models that are easy to erect, install and fit out. Small buildings and pods specifically designed to slip into garden spaces are now widely available. Some of the stylish and contemporary designs available at OECO make a real statement and are beautiful places in which to work, as well as being eco-friendly.

Why move house for extra space when you can put the extra room you need in the garden?

Since planning regulations were changed back in October 2008, the number of bespoke garden offices in the United Kingdom has increased. With garden building experts such as OECO, the possibilities for your outdoor office space are endless. If necessary, they will work with your plumber to enable the installation of a shower room and toilet. Interior walls and doors can be fitted, extra sound-proofing, bespoke lighting and exterior decking are all feasible. The limits are only in your imagination.

The TUC states that the average commute-time for conventional workers who attend a place of work other than their home was 47.8 minutes back in 2008. Well, the average commute time for those with a garden office is about 30 seconds. Just think of all the extra work you can get done during that time, let alone the positive effects on the environment and your bank balance.

Race to save the devil Down Under

It’s been hundreds of years since the Tasmanian devil last lived on the Australian mainland but, in the misty hills of Barrington Tops, a pioneering group is being bred for survival.

Rat-like in appearance but with a marsupial pouch and carnivorous jaws that can crack bone, Tasmanian devils are an enigmatic Australian species.

They are reclusive creatures who sleep by day and forage by night, and are best known for the guttural cries which saw the early British settlers call them “devils” and inspired a Warner Bros. cartoon character.

But the burrowing, tree-climbing animals are in a battle for survival against an aggressive and contagious facial cancer which experts fear could see them become extinct in the wild in as little as five years.

“Its viability at present seems critical,” said conservationist Tim Faulkner of the animal.

“In 1996 the disease was first found — since then you’ve had a 91 percent population decrease,” Faulkner, who is based at the Australian Reptile Park, said.

“There’s no sign of a cure, there’s no sign of a vaccine and there’s no sign of the disease slowing up.”

Devil facial tumour disease has seen the animals plunge from a pest species to endangered in a very short period, with Faulkner estimating their numbers — once in excess of 250,000 — in the “low tens of thousands.”

They once roamed Australia but since about 1600 have been isolated to Tasmania, an island state south of the mainland, where a series of disease outbreaks has seen their genetic stocks severely diminished.

The cancer, which typically causes death within three to six months, is spread during fighting over food and territory, when a healthy devil will bite an infected devil’s face and pick up cancer cells.

Because the devils are so inbred their immune systems fail to recognise the cancer cell as foreign and don’t fight it off, according to geneticist Kathy Belov, who describes the animals as “immunological clones”.

Belov’s team at the University of Sydney are studying the tumour in search of a vaccine or cure, but she believes cataloguing the genes of healthy animals and selectively breeding them in captivity is the devils’ best hope.

“In 30 years’ time, a few generations down the track, we want devils that we can release back into the wild that can hunt and can fend for themselves,” Belov told AFP.

“We want to have devils that behave like wild animals, but not to lose any of that (genetic) diversity, and that’s going to be the challenge.”

Enter “Devil Ark” — 500 hectares (1,236 acres) of farmland set in pristine national park which was gifted to the Tasmanian devil conservation movement by the wealthy Packer family of casino and media fortunes.

Situated in remote and mountainous alpine forest very similar to the devils’ natural habitat, Devil Ark is what keeper Adrian Good describes as a “free-range” captive breeding project.

Devils are kept in densely vegetated pens of between two and three football fields in size enclosed by a climb and burrow-proof fence, and their pen mates are chosen by experts from a genetic “stud book” to optimise breeding.

Their lives are designed to closely mirror those of wild devils; they are left a kangaroo or other carcass to eat in the evenings and will sleep through the day.

Each pen contains between six and 10 devils, with an even mix of males and females, and Good said there had been excellent breeding success last year, which was the Ark’s first year of operation, with 24 babies — or “joeys” — born.

“They just love being here, all the signs are that they are happy and healthy devils,” he said.

Social dominance is a constant battle in the wild and Devil Ark is no different — having to share their territory with others forces the devils to fight for their food and mating rights, skills they can quickly lose in a zoo.

“Those wild traits are crucial for them being able to survive when they’re re-released,” said Good.

There are currently just under 100 devils living at the Ark and keepers are targeting 350 by 2016, with plans for as many as 1,000 in the years after that to be trickled back into Tasmania once the wild population dies out.

The Australian Reptile Park’s Faulkner is overseeing the project and said it was unique in the world because unlike most other endangered species captive-bred devils would be able to be returned to their habitat.

“Its environment’s pristine, feral predators aren’t a problem, if we can just get past the disease you can put them back and it literally has a happy ending,” he said.

Belov said there would be valuable lessons for the management of other vulnerable native species, including the koala.

“I think we have to learn from the devil, this disease simply couldn’t have spread like it has had there been more genetic diversity,” she said.

“It’s a warning for us because we have a lot of wildlife populations that are isolated… and that’s where you have problems.”

Josh Powell’s father found guilty in voyeurism case

Ted S. Warren / AP

Steve Powell looks toward his attorneys during the day of final arguments in his voyeurism trial, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, in Tacoma, Wash.

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

TACOMA, Wash. — A jury found Steven Powell guilty Wednesday on 14 counts of voyeurism for taking?pictures of girls and women in various states of undress for the purpose of sexual gratification. The charges?stemmed from an investigation into his missing daughter-in-law.

Defense attorneys had argued that there was too much reasonable doubt in the case to convict Powell, but jurors disagreed, finding him guilty on all counts.

Powell is the former father-in-law of Susan Powell, who has been missing since December 2009. Her husband, Josh Powell, who is Steven’s son, was a person of interest in her disappearance. He killed himself and the couple’s two children in an explosion in Graham, Wash., earlier this year.

Steven Powell’s sentencing hearing was scheduled for June 15. He?faces a standard sentence of about four years, but the state has alleged aggravating factors that could result in a longer term.

Authorities brought the voyeurism charges last year after searching Steve Powell’s home during their investigation into the disappearance of Susan Powell in Utah.?

Jurors questioned evidence during deliberations, asking if a disc of pictures was found in boxes containing only Steve Powell’s belongings.

Watch the video and read the full story on King5.com

Evidence used by prosecutors included photos of young girls in bathrooms, girls changing clothes and at least one video of Powell allegedly touching himself. The photo corresponding to each charge was shown once again to jurors during the prosecution’s closing arguments.

Defense attorneys argued reasonable doubt exists and that, “this case is not about what you feel, it’s about what you know.”

The photos were found on Powell’s computer last fall when police searched his Puyallup home. At the time, Powell’s former daughter-in-law, Susan Powell, had been missing for nearly two years. Officers were looking for her journals.

A child pornography charge against Steven Powell was thrown out last week.

Photos of Susan Powell were tossed out as evidence because she was not considered one of the alleged victims in the voyeurism case.

HBT: On this date, Cobb beat a man badly

Via BTF, we are reminded that today is the 96th anniversary of Ty Cobb doing something which, if today?s Hall of Fame voters are to be believed, wasn?t as bad as taking some HGH: he beat the hell out of a fan:

source:

My favorite part came right afterward. It seems that AL President Ban Johnson was actually at the game. He was asked afterward if Cobb would get a suspension. He said ?I don?t know until I hear the facts ??

The story went on to say that the Highlanders lost because they were ?unable to match the Tigers in rungetting.?

Ah, it was a simpler time. If by ?simpler? you mean freakin? absurd.

MP WELCOMES 'NICE' TURNAROUND ON PROSTATE CANCER …

Posted on 16th May 2012 in to David Tredinnick and Parliament

David Tredinnick has welcomed today?s announcement by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) that they are to recommend abiraterone ? the breakthrough treatment for advanced prostate cancer ? on the NHS in England and Wales. NICE has now accepted the Prostate Cancer Charity?s argument that abiraterone should be treated as an ?end of life? drug and has decided to overturn its draft decision in February not to fund the drug generally on the NHS.

The Bosworth MP, who is a member of the House of Commons Health Select Committee, said, ?This is fantastic news for men with advanced prostate cancer. It means that men whose cancer has stopped responding to other hormone therapy and chemotherapy will be able to receive the drug without having to make an application through the Cancer Drugs Fund. The Prostate Cancer Charity has run a very effective campaign on this issue and I am very pleased it has been so successful.

?I wrote to the Prime Minister about this vital issue and today?s announcement represents a resounding triumph for each of the thousands of men with advanced prostate cancer. I am delighted that NICE has overturned its earlier decision after reviewing the evidence. Abiraterone is a genuine breakthrough drug that gives men with advanced prostate cancer improved quality of life.?

Bryan Jones, policy and campaigns manager for the Prostate Cancer Charity, thanked David Tredinnick saying, ?Your support for our campaign in Parliament in recent months has been vital in helping to achieve this outcome. Thank you for your work on behalf of men with prostate cancer.?
